Asia is one of the areas of the world with the greatest economic potential. The leading role in this region belongs to China, as her continued growth has already earned her a position in the top five largest world economies.
Average annual economic growth in China has exceeded 8% in the last five years and has in turn stimulated the growth of the entire Asian-pacific region.
Experts predict that this growth will continue and that in the next few decades this area, especially China, will become one of the leading world economies.
In addition to having the fastest growing market in China, Asia also has the largest reserves of natural gas and oil in Russia, the cheapest and increasingly highly educated work force in India and in China. South Korea offers the best Price-Earnings ratio (i.e. the ratio between company price and profits generated). Turkey is in the process of privatizing of its state industries and joining the EU and is experiencing 7% per annum economic growth, while Japan’s economy is reviving and growing again. The result of all this is a marked growth in the purchasing power of the population of the region.
While Asia has certainly a remarkable economic potential, we have to be well aware that economic growth is cyclical and that in instances such as this, investments have to be long-term. Fund value on 9.9.2010
